Camille Begin: A Taste of the Nation http://events.msu.edu/main.php?view=event&calendarid=default&eventid=1505231044070
Conferences / Seminars / Lectures

During the Depression, the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) dispatched writers to sample the fare at group eating events like church dinners, political barbecues and clambakes. Its America Eats project sought nothing less than to sample, and report upon, the tremendous range of foods eaten across the United States. Camille Begin shapes a cultural and sensory history of New Deal-era eating from the FWP archives, describing in mouth-watering detail how Americans tasted their food. Begin explores how likes and dislikes, cravings and disgust operated within local sensory economies that she culls from the FWP's vivid descriptions, visual cues, culinary expectations, recipes and accounts of restaurant meals. She also illustrates how nostalgia, prescriptive gender ideals, and racial stereotypes shaped how the FWP was able to frame regional food cultures as "American."]]>

How to Engage You Audience with Visual Storytelling with Karl Gude http://events.msu.edu/main.php?view=event&calendarid=default&eventid=1505231279970
Special Events

In the comic strip Dilbert, Dogbert says, "Information is gushing toward your brain like a fire hose aimed at a teacup!" Nowadays, all of us are drowning in a sea of data. This means that there is a lot of competition for eyeballs. People trying to communicate their messages are doing all they can to find fresh, effective ways to engage and inform inundated audiences. Infographics are powerful tools that, through a careful combination of words and images, grab people's attention and make your message stand out. Infographics are uniquely effective at clarifying and summarizing complex information in all industries-from medicine and science to business and technology-and for all audiences-from policy makers to teenagers. Karl Gude is not only an expert at infographics, he's a passionate and fun teacher. You will learn: · Why making information visual is better than words alone to get your message across · Some important steps to consider when planning a visual project · Types of data that are best visualized · The Dos and Don'ts of visual storytelling.]]>

Preparing for Fieldwork in Archives http://events.msu.edu/main.php?view=event&calendarid=default&eventid=1505231487124
Training

This workshop series takes place in the Main Library's Special Collections Seminar Room, 1-West This four-part workshop series is designed to help prepare graduate students for conducting fieldwork in archives as a part of - or the whole of - their research. The sessions will first explain what archives are, how they work and the theory and methods behind acquisition, processing and accessibility of archival materials. Participants will then learn how to find archive, to search their holdings and to read a finding aid. Tips will be given on how to request, use and organize material. The workshop will also include a session on digitized and open access archives (including a discussion on the pros and cons of these archives for scholars) and a final session on the ethics of archives, particularly relevant for scholars working in subaltern archives (but also arguably important for all scholars), including strategies for how to partner and work side-by-side with the creators or stewards of the materials being used for research. The workshop is open to all graduate students who intend to do (or are considering) fieldwork in archives; this opportunity is not limited to history graduate students. To sign up, please email Jessica Achberger: achberg2@msu.edu. Other workshops are on: Monday, October 9, 12-1:30 p.m. Monday, October 23, 12-1:30 p.m. Monday, November 6, 12-1:30 p.m.]]>

Host: Long-term Ecological Research Program Note: Join us for the day to learn about sustainable agriculture at the Kellogg Biological Station's Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) site, where scientists have been researching for decades ways to grow the food we need while enhancing and protecting our state's natural resources. During a field tour of the LTER site, participants will learn from scientists about cutting edge research in sustainable agriculture, participate in hands-on science activities designed for youth and later brainstorm with colleagues ideas for weaving sustainable ag research into youth programming. Registration is required by Sept. 17. There is no cost for attending this event and lunch is provided. Lodging is available on the evening of Monday, Sept. 25 at KBS.]]>
