Two Truths and a Lie http://events.msu.edu/main.php?view=event&calendarid=default&eventid=1547058936664
Public Programs

Location: C301 Snyder, 362 Bogue Street "A poem should be equal to/not true." -- from "Ars Poetica" by Archibald MacLeish Poets, lucky artists, get to write about what is real and what is imagined. They are neither novelists nor biographers. They reach for truth, but it's a higher truth -- Truth with a capital T, which frequently isn't true in all ways. As poet Richard Hugo said, "Sometimes you have to violate the facts." He's also famous for advising poets, "You owe reality nothing and the truth about your feelings everything." But sometimes a poet must get some facts right. How do poets navigate what is true and what is not in their search for emotional Truth? What details can they conjure instead of report? At this workshop led by Anita Skeen, Cindy Hunter Morgan and Laura Apol, you'll explore these questions, and you'll have a chance to write your own poems that blend the real and the imagined. ]]>

Academic

The periodic table of elements provides the collection of puzzle pieces (elements) that form everything-from the food we eat to the cars we drive. As we have learned more about each of the puzzle pieces, the impact has been tremendous on the economy, on national security and on our lives, from the development of new technologies to strategies towards improved health. This talk will provide a walk through the elements, with a significant focus on lesser known parts of the periodic table, demonstrating how the knowledge we have gained has been so impactful upon our everyday lives. Challenges and opportunities that drive our quest for further understanding of the elements will also be addressed.]]>
