About the Speaker: Muyodi received a doctorate in Water Resources Management in the year 2000. He is currently working as deputy principal in the College of Natural Sciences, Makerere University, were he is in charge of teaching, managing academic, internship and research activities of the college. Muyodi has been principal investigator in research projects including capacity building at graduate level in demand-driven research projects. In addition, he has also trained fisher communities in post-harvest technologies and livelihood improvement. About the Talk: This study was carried out in Lake Kijanebalola, a small satellite lake in the Lake Victoria basin, in 2007 and then in 2015. A total of 14 fish species were identified but catches declined drastically between the two sampling periods owing to intensive fishing pressure. Juvenile fish were concentrated in shallow inshore areas. The water quality changed between 2007 and 2015, with significant increases in temperature, oxygen concentrations, pH and BOD, suggesting that the lake had become eutrophic. There was a significant decrease in fecal coliforms in the water suggesting improved sanitation in the lake basin. Recommendations for management of the fishery and catchment area through community involvement and education have been included. ]]>

Democracy in Crisis http://events.msu.edu/main.php?view=event&calendarid=default&eventid=1539351473290
Academic

Brazil's 2018 presidential election has been marked by a tense climate of political polarization, violence and intolerance. Direct attacks on social justice activists and organizations have become normalized. The conviction and imprisonment of the leading left-leaning candidate has opened the possibility of a successful presidential run by far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who has openly attacked black, LGBTQ, women's and indigenous communities and the press. What is the impact of populist, conservative and white nationalist rhetorics on vulnerable communities? How are those communities and their allies responding? What is the role of a free press in this scenario? Brazil experts Leonora Paula and Rachel Mourao discuss the current state of democracy, political discourse and polarization in Brazil and draw comparisons to contemporary U.S. and world politics. ]]>

Year of Global Africa: Eye on Africa - David Coplan, http://events.msu.edu/main.php?view=event&calendarid=default&eventid=1537900495780
Academic

About the Talk: This presentation promotes the role of Africa and Africanists in the broad field of Border Studies, and in particular what Africa contributes to Border Theory beyond empirical case studies. The argument insists that the time when Euro-America provided the theory, while Africa provided a field for data collection, exemplification and conceptual testing has passed. It also involves a claim that the European and North American archive in the field is suffering some enervation, and that African border studies can provide a source of reinvigoration. About the Speaker: David B. Coplan is Professor Emeritus in Social Anthropology at the University of The Witwatersrand. He has been researching and writing about South African performing arts and media since 1976. He is the author of numerous publications, including most notably "In Township Tonight! South Africa's Black City Music and Theatre" (1986) - revised, enlarged and published in a second edition in 2007. Prof. Coplan is also a specialist in the ethnographic history and performance culture of the Basotho of southern Africa. His related works include 'In the Time of Cannibals: the Word Music of South Africa's Basotho Migrants' (Chicago 1994) and the film "Songs of the Adventurers" (Constant Spring Productions 1986). Prof. Coplan appears frequently on South African radio and television as an arts, culture and media commentator. He has also written extensively for the popular press and a general readership beyond academic publishing. ]]>

Talk Title: Same Sex Marriage In The Constitutional Court of South And The U.S. Supreme Court** About the Speaker: On turning six, during World War II, Albie Sachs received a card from his father expressing the wish that he would grow up to be a soldier in the fight for liberation. And so he did. In May of 2018, Judge Sachs was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law from MSU College of Law. In between, he has had a remarkable life and career. Many of his best-known judgments cross a variety of areas of law: fighting against discrimination, providing HIV-positive pregnant women with drugs to reduce the risk of transmission to their newborn babies, setting labor laws in place, helping to overthrow South Africa's statute defining marriage as between one man and one woman, all with the common theme of the promotion of an individual's right to equality and dignity. He has been heavily engaged in the fields of art and architecture, playing an active role in the development of the Constitutional Court building and its art collection on the site of the Old Fort Prison in Johannesburg. In addition to his work on the Court, he has traveled to many countries sharing South African experience in healing divided societies. He is currently engaged in writing a series of four books on the writing of the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights with his co-author, noted South African historian, Dr. Andre Odendaal. **This special Eye on Africa is part of a unique 1-credit course offered during the first 3 weeks of Spring semester January 2019 co-sponsored by MSU African Studies and MSU Law College.
