The Rise of Anti-Semitism on Campus: What Can Universities Do To Fight This Trend  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Brad Isakson, Jewish Studies minor, MSU

Brad Isakson's research focuses on the resurgence of contemporary anti-Semitism on American campuses. Isakson argues that many of the themes in this "new" anti-Semitism are recycled elements of older tropes, but others deal largely with a hatred of Israel that crosses the line of legitimate criticism into demonization. The US Department of State's "Working Definition of Anti-Semitism," if adopted by universities, would help protect Jewish students while protecting freedom of speech. In the meantime, universities like Michigan State can incorporate education about anti-Semitism into their freshman orientation or mandatory diversity programming. Anti-Semitism needs to be appropriately addressed on campus in order to maintain an open and safe environment for everyone.
