SUMMARY:Why John Snow still matters to modern epidemiology
DESCRIPTION:
John Snow is an iconic figure in epidemiology,
but more importantly, he is relevant to how
we formulate epidemiologic strategies today.
I will describe and discuss Snow's achievements,
drawing on our 2003 biography, stressing
the following particularly valuable features
of Snow's thought and behavior.
\n
- Grounding
of his disease theories in pathophsiology
\n
-A focus on disease transmission rather
than on disease agent
\n
-Use of knowledge
from other areas of science to falsify the
major competing hypothesis
\n
-Unprejudiced
approach to understanding the role of social
class
\n
-Attention to development of simple
prevention measures
\n
- Perseverance in
data collection
\n
-Willingness to publish
before every issue has been resolved.
\n
