SUMMARY:Art & Art History Research Lecture Series: Karin Zitzewitz
DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Zitzewitz will present her research in a lecture
titled, Forms of the Secular in Modern
Indian Art. Since 1996, Hindu nationalist activists
have publicly declared that the work
of India's most prominent modernist painter,
M.F. Husain, offends their religious sensibilities.
The success of this campaign hinges on
the association of modernist art with secularism.
Examining Husain alongside two of his contemporaries,
Zitzewitz shows the range of possible
manifestations of the link between art
and secularism in contemporary India. \n\n
