SUMMARY:Maternal Autonomy and Infant Health in Rural India
DESCRIPTION:
Childhood under-nutrition is a public health issue
throughout the developing world. Poor nutritional
status is evident in children even
when parents meet their daily dietary requirements.
  Recently, investigators postulate a
linkage between women's autonomy and child health,
particularly in countries such as India
whee mothers play a vital role in childcare.
This talk presents results from a study embedded
 in a randomized educational intervention
trial to improve infant feeding behaviors among
a rural population in the state of Andthra
Prades, India. We investigate teh influence
of maternal autonomy on child feeding and child
 nutritional status through a mix-methodological
approach. We also explore local perceptions
 and beliefs, regarding women's autonomy
as well as the influence of environmental
factors, such as income and family structure,
 on infant feeding practices. \n\n
