UNDERSTANDING
THE SOCIAL & ETHICAL DIMENSIONS OF
NANO-BIOSENSORS IN ANIMAL AGRICULTURE & WELFARE:
A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY DIALOGUE.\n
\n
A multi-disciplinary
team of researchers from MSUs
Center for the Study of Standards in Society
(CS3) has received a National Science Foundation
(NSF) grant to convene a planning workshop
on the social and ethical dimensions of
nano-biosensors in animal agriculture and welfare.
Workshop outcomes will provide the foundation
for a larger follow-up grant proposal
to NSF to create a basic understanding of the
supply chain for nano-biosensors in animal
agricultural, and to anticipate their potential
social / ethical dimensions so as to socially
inform nano-biosensor technologies as they
mature. The primary research activities emerging
from these efforts will include broader
stakeholder workshops involving a range of
actors who are potentially impacted by nano-biosensors
at different levels of the supply chain.
 Understanding and anticipating these dimensions
will help to ensure that whatever applications
emerge are: (1) morally acceptable
and desirable with regard to implementation,
information handling, and privacy; (2) fair
to vulnerable parties; and (3) worthy of public
trust. This brown bag seminar convenes
the multi-disciplinary project team in an open
round table discussion of major issues to be
covered in a project white paper to inform
future substantive directions and methodological
approaches associated with this project.
Discussants will explore potentially contrasting
public perceptions of risk associated with
similar applications of nano-biosensors in
human medicine and public health, with an eye
toward developing a mutually informative framework
for addressing risk narratives surrounding
nano-biosensor applications in both animal
agriculture and human health sectors.\n
The
university community and general public are
encouraged to attend this event to hear about
this and future project related activities.
