SUMMARY:Faculty Emeriti Association Lecture
DESCRIPTION:
Professor Robert T. Pennock, Lyman Briggs College,
the Philosophy Department, the Department
of Computer Science, and the Ecology, Evolutionary
Biology and Behavior graduate program,
"Evolution in Action: Observing Evolutionary
Processes in Real Time." \n
Abstract:
The common view of the general public about
evolution is antiquated. Creationists continue
to think that there is no evidence for
evolution, but even members of the public who
accept it often think that our scientific understanding
of evolution comes just from fossils.
Such confusions arise in part from a misunderstanding
of the role of observation in
scientific reasoning. This talk focuses on
the nature of observational evidence and on recent
advances in evolutionary modeling, using
both natural and digital organisms, that have
allowed scientists to directly investigate
the mechanisms of evolution as they operate
in the present.\n
