 HIGH THROUGHPUT
 STRATEGIES FOR MODIFYING EPILEPSY\n
 HOST: JOSEPH
 R. HAYWOOD\n
 A major goal in neuropharmacology
 is to devise disease-modifying therapies
for chronic neurological disorders such as epilepsy.
 We are using large-scale transcriptional
profiling of neurons thought to be involved
in the process of epileptogenesis to suggest
novel pathways and protein targets. We then
use high throughput screening for small molecule
modulators of these targets to develop
new reagents that can be used to probe specific
 receptors in epilepsy-related pathways. The
successes and challenges of this approach
in academic laboratories will be discussed.\n\n
