SUMMARY:Alberto Ginastera and the Cold War: A 'Musical MacNamara' in the United States
DESCRIPTION:
Carol Hess, Professor of Musicology, College of
 Music\n
 \n
What do we in the United States know
about Latin American music and how do we know
it? This lecture is part of a broader study
that seeks to illuminate this question by
considering the experiences of the so-called
Big Three of twentieth-century Latin American
art music: Carlos Chávez (Mexico), Alberto Ginastera
 (Argentina) and Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazil).
Focusing on the second of these important
 figures, this lecture traces Ginastera's
career in the United States, especially as
it was affected by anti-nationalist sentiments
 during the Cold War. \n
