SUMMARY:Sympathetic Neural Control in Humans: Sex Differences and the Ovarian Cycle
DESCRIPTION:
Sex differences in the neural control of circulation
 are increasingly being recognized, yet
 underlying mechanisms remain equivocal. The
sympathetic nervous system is central to the
regulation of both short- and long-term blood
pressure, and evidence is beginning to emerge
 indicating altered sympathetic neural activity
(and reactivity) not only between men and
women, but also within women at various stages
of the ovarian cycle. This seminar will explore
the influence of sex and the ovarian cycle
 on post-ganglionic sympathetic neural outflow
in humans via the technique of microneurography.
More specifically, Dr. Carter will compare
 sympathetic neural control and reactivity
in 1) young men and women, and 2) premenopausal
women during high and low levels of estradiol
 and progesterone. These findings will
be discussed as they pertain to increased risk
of orthostatic intolerance in young women,
as well as the post-menopausal surge in cardiovascular
 disease.\n\n
