 Mapleson brought his opera company to Kansas 
 City three times in the mid-1880s.  His first 
 tour found him locked in a duel for operatic 
 supremacy with Henry Abbey's troupe from the 
 Metropolitan Opera, as the two operatic commanders 
 maneuvered their forces on a cross-country 
 campaign in the winter of 1884.\n\n
