SUMMARY:Janet Kaufmann's "The Fantasy of the Clip Art Farm" and Factory Farming in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:
 A community conversation with:\n
 Janet Kauffman,
 author of Trespassing\n
 Arthur Versluis, Chair
of Religious Studies at MSU and author of
 Island Farm\n
 Craig Harris, MSU, Department of
 Sociology\n
 Wynne Wright, MSU, Department of

 \n
 \n
 Kauffman's
 Trespassing: Dirt Stories
and Field Notes (Wayne State, 2006) as a whole
and "The Fantasy of the Clip Art Farm" depicts
the realities of food production in post-Industrial
 rural Michigan. In particular, she
focuses on the meat industry and the environmental
 and sociological after-effects of farming
on rural communities. The essay that will
start the discussion at this event more directly
addresses the space between the bucolic
image still associated with American farming
and the vastly different realities of the industry.
The other panelists will provide commentary
and reflection from their own areas of
 expertise.\n

 Cosponsored by the Humanities
Innovation Center 3.0 in the College of Arts
