SUMMARY:JEWISH STUDIES FACULTY STUDENT RESEARCH SEMINAR
DESCRIPTION:
"A Geography of Mourning: Jewish American Narratives"\n
 \n
 Steve
 Weiland, Michigan State University\n
 \n
 Steve
 Weiland explores autobiographical
 accounts of mourning, distinguishing those
that follow the traditional path (e.g., the
year of synagogue-based observance) from those
that are historical, genealogical, and often
geographical, or featuring travel to Eastern
Europe in search of origins. In the first
category are narratives like Ari Goldman's
"A Year of Kaddish"; in the second are tales
like Nancy Miller's "What Was Saved: Pieces of
a Jewish Past." These texts allow for a look
at the level of the individual at questions
of Jewish-American identity as they appeared
last year in the Pew Research Center's "Portrait
 of Jewish Americans." \n
