SUMMARY:MSU Extension Programs  in Tourism Developement
DESCRIPTION:
 MSU Extension's tourism team works statewide addressing 
 community needs and interests in leveraging 
 assets and resources for tourism development. 
 In this seminar, Andy Northrop will 
 discuss the Tourism Development Programs and 
 how they have helped rural and urban communities 
 identify assets, leverage first-time visitors' 
 perspectives to strengthen communities 
 and spawn regional collaborations. He will also 
 discuss forms of agritourism, nature-based 
 tourism and cultural tourism and the importance 
 of those types of tourism in MI and globally 
 too. Attendees will have an opportunity 
 to share tourism examples in their countries 
 as well.\n

 	Andy Northrop serves as a statewide 
 educator for Michigan State University 
 Extension.  Northrop centers his expertise on 
 creating communities where people want to live, 
 work and play via leadership, tourism and 
 sustainability. He has focused on international 
 development and education for more than 
 ten years. Northrop has worked in New Zealand, 
 South Korea, St. Eustatius, Thailand and conducted 
 research in Costa Rica and Guatemala.  
 He holds an M.A. in sustainable development 
 from SIT Graduate Institute, and is a Michigan 
 State University alum with bachelor's degree 
 in psychology. Northrop has certifications 
 in sustainability leadership from the University 
 of Oregon and citizen planner and facilitation 
 leadership from Michigan State University 
 Extension.\n
