SUMMARY:Public Talk on Canonical Forms featuring Noam Elkies
DESCRIPTION:
FRIB invites the community to the next Advanced
Studies Gateway public talk event. A lecture
about a mathematician's view of canonical forms
 featuring Harvard professor of mathematics
Noam Elkies will begin at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10
in 1300 FRIB Laboratory, 640 South Shaw Lane,
 on Michigan State University's campus.\n
 \n
In a musical canon-be it "Three Blind Mice" or
the climax of a Bach fugue-a melody can act
as its own harmony. The task of finding such
melodies leads us to consider musical structure
from points of view usually associated with
science and mathematics, not the arts. The
lecture will be illustrated with diagrams as
well as a variety of musical examples (including
at least one improvised in real time), and
will require no technical background in either
 music or mathematics. Partial financial
support is provided by the MSU Office of the
Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.\n
 \n
 All
 Advanced Studies Gateway events are
free and open to the public. Parking will
be available in the Shaw Lane and Wharton Center
 parking ramps. \n
 \n
 The Advanced Studies Gateway
is an initiative at FRIB that brings together
 researchers, innovators, creative thinkers,
artists, and performers from all fields
and strengthens ties between Michigan State
University and the community. Activities include
research workshops as well as public talks,
concerts, and special events that are free
 and open to the public.\n
