SUMMARY:Read a Poet / Write a Poem
DESCRIPTION:
Monday, Jan. 14: Join the RCAH Center for poetry's
interim director Cindy Hunter Morgan for
a discussion of Anna Akhmatova's "Requiem,"
a cycle of personal and political poems dealing
with Stalin's reign of terror. Akhmatova's
work is constructed with cinematic care, moving
between scenes, time periods and points of
view with film-like cuts. Cinematic qualities
are embedded in the craft and construction
of the poem, and are essential to its success.
Many of the techniques Akhmatova used are
both poetic and cinematic, and are useful examples
of how cinematic devices can be used in
 poetry.\n
 \n
Monday, Jan. 28: Join us again for
 a follow-up workshop in which we''ll use a
few of Akhmatova's shorter (but still cinematic!)
poems as writing prompts. This will be a
generative workshop: you'll leave with a few
drafts of new poems. We'll think more deeply
about how poets can harness cinematic techniques,
and we'll have fun. We'll supply everything
you need, but feel free to bring your own
journal and pen if you'd prefer. \n
 \n
 PLEASE
NOTE! If you're only able to join us for one
workshop, come! You do not have to attend both
workshops. They are designed to complement
each other, and your participation in one will
enhance the experience of the other, but if
you can only make it to one, that's okay. \n\n
