SUMMARY:Per(Sister): Developing a Socially Engaged Art Exhibition in the Shadow of Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed curator and museum leader Dr. Monica
Ramirez-Montagut, Director of the Newcomb Art
Museum at Tulane University, will discuss the
 Newcomb's exhibition, "Per(Sister): Incarcerated
Women of Louisiana." The exhibition emerges
out of the Newcomb's partnership with
 formerly incarcerated women, community organizations,
 stakeholders, and those directly impacted
by the prison system, in order to shine
a light on complex social and personal issues
identified and expressed by the women themselves.\n
 \n
 In
 her presentation, Dr. Ramirez-Motangut
 explores the complex exhibition development
process and reflects on lessons learned
for other institutions seeking to develop socially
 engaged and ethically responsible exhibition
 projects.\n
 \n
 Respondent comments will
be offered by Janie Paul (Arthur F. Thurnau Professor
Emerita, School of Art & Design, University
of Michigan) who will share insights
developed from her work in the Prison Creative
 Arts Program.\n\n
