SUMMARY:Creating the "Worthy" Patient in Transgender Medicine with Dr. Stef Shuster
DESCRIPTION:
For much of the 20th century, health providers
of transgender medicine have tacitly worked
within the logics of assigning "worth" to their
trans patients. In the 1950s, "worth" was
based upon patients who conformed to rigid gendered
 expectations, held respectable jobs, and
acquiesced to medical authority. Notions of
worth continue to shape how medical providers
 understand trans people, although "worth"
is now covertly defined as trans people who are
 compliant, dutiful, and authentically trans.\n\n
