 titled "Pencils on surfaces with normal crossings 
 and the Kodaira dimension of Mg,n"\n

 The first half of the talk 
 will be a colloquium style talk, where I will 
 recall the history of the problem of determining 
 the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space 
 of curves. In the second half I will report 
 on joint work with D. Agostini, where we study 
 smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces 
 with normal crossings. As a consequence we 
 obtain new instances of (g,n) where Mg,n is 
 of negative Kodaira dimension and provide bounds 
 for the Kodaira dimension of M16 and M12,8.\n\n
