Featuring works by Franz Liszt, Terry Riley, Tōru
Takemitsu, Bunita Marcus and L'Histoire
du soldat by Igor Stravinsky. Artists: Derek
Kealii Polischuk, piano; Yvonne Lam, violin;

\n
Featuring pianist
Derek Polischuk, the theme of the program opens
with grief and loss, followed by comfort-"Funerailles"
by Franz Liszt, and his Consolation
#3 in D-Flat Major. Then, pure musical
joy-a set of three piano works based on songs
by the Beatles-a setting of "Norwegian Wood"
by Pauline Oliveros, a setting of "Golden Slumbers"
by Toru Takemitsu, and "The Walrus in
Memorium" by Terry Riley.\n
 \n
For the second
half of the program, Polischuk is joined by
Yvonne Lam, violin and Guy Yehuda, clarinet to
perform the suite from "L'Histoire du soldat
(The Soldier's Tale)", by Igor Stravinsky.
Stravinsky wrote this remarkable work in 1917/1918
for a small theatre company while isolated
in Switzerland during World War I, about
a soldier who battles for his soul with the
devil. After a successful premiere, the Spanish
Flu Pandemic shut all theaters in Switzerland.
Out of necessity, he created this more
intimate trio version. \n\n
