Dr. Keller will present her research in a lecture title, Ja Ta: The Power of Photography in Mali, West Africa. Keller will investigate the multivalent representational power photographs hold in Mali, West Africa. At once secular and spiritual, informing both the practice and meaning of the medium, their potency is reflected in local term for photograph, ja, meaning one's "double" or "shadow" in the nation's most widely spoken language, Bamanankan.
