Conversatino on State of Indigenous People
(International Events (Study Abroad, ...))
Please join us in welcoming Program Director, Deborah McGregor from the Centre of Aboriginal Initiatives in Univeristy of Toronto for a timely and informative conversation about today's state of indigenous people.
Dr. McGregor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Aboriginal Studies at the University of Toronto. She is Anishinabe from Whitefish River First Nation, Birch Island, Ontario. For two decades she has been an educator at both the university and community levels and has been involved in curriculum development, research and teaching.
Her research focus is on Indigenous knowledge in relation to the environment. More specifically, she has focused Traditional Knowledge (TK) and its application in various contexts including environmental management, forestry, sustainable development and water conservation. The primary theme found throughout her research is about improving relations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal parties;
and how to ensure the appropriate consideration of Aboriginal peoples' knowledge, values and rights in environmental and resource management in Canada.
Presented in collaboration with Michigan State University's American Indian Studies Program, Canadian Studies Center, Department of Philosophy, and Native American Institute.
A discussion between MSU students and Univ of Toronto students at the First Nations House on UT's campus prompted this visit to Michigan State.The House provides culturally supportive services and programs to Aboriginal students and the general community. Graduate students who participated in the meeting will share their takeaways. Dr. McGregor will follow with a keynote about her work. Also, she will provide insight on the "Idle No More" movement among Aboriginal people in Canada concerning protection of their culture and sovereignty.
