Broad Underground Film Series: Uso Justo
(Movie / Film)
The Broad Underground Film Series presents experimental and avant-garde film and video screenings programmed in response to exhibitions at the MSU Broad Art Museum. This event is inspired by themes in the exhibition Blind Spot: Stephanie Syjuco, on view through July 23, 2023. Broad Underground is an ongoing collaboration between the MSU Broad Art Museum and the Film Studies Program, Department of English at Michigan State University. Registration for this free event is required.
Uso Justo: Mexican Filmmakers & Altered Collections
Programmed by Cristóbal Martinez, PhD Student in English and Film Studies at MSU, and Kaveh Askari, Associate Professor and Director, Film Studies Program at MSU.
Uso justo, or fair use, is a legal framework that refers to the limited use of copyrighted material without needing to obtain authorization. In Spanish the word "uso" literally translates to use and "justo" expresses a sense of justice. Inspired by themes of archival manipulation that are present in Blind Spot: Stephanie Syjuco, this program of short film and video works highlights filmmakers and artists of Mexican heritage who use, mobilize, and experiment with found footage to rearticulate a personal, informal, and just account of history.
