Update on Galactosemia: A "Familiar" Disease with Perpetual Enigmas
(Conferences / Seminars / Lectures) Pediatric Grand Rounds presented by: Robert Conway, MD, Asst. Professor & Director, Biochemical Genetics Clinical Program, Pediatrics & Human Medicine, Michigan State University. Objectives: review the basic biochemistry and genetics of galactosemia; understand the clinical presentation of the disorder and how to make the diagnosis; learn how newborn screening assists in the diagnosis and alters the natural history of the disease; know the late-onset complications of the disorder and their consequences in the treated patient; and discuss the current theories about the pathology of the disorder and why current available treatment is sub-optimal.
