Why John Snow still matters to modern epidemiology  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

John Snow is an iconic figure in epidemiology, but more importantly, he is relevant to how we formulate epidemiologic strategies today. I will describe and discuss Snow's achievements, drawing on our 2003 biography, stressing the following particularly valuable features of Snow's thought and behavior.

- Grounding of his disease theories in pathophsiology

-A focus on disease transmission rather than on disease agent

-Use of knowledge from other areas of science to falsify the major competing hypothesis

-Unprejudiced approach to understanding the role of social class

-Attention to development of simple prevention measures

- Perseverance in data collection

-Willingness to publish before every issue has been resolved.

Presented by Nigel Paneth, M.D.,MPH of Michigan State University's Department of Epidemiology as part of the Department of Epidemiology's Spring Seminar Series.
