Student Perspectives: Africa Here & Now: Contemporary Art & Identity
(Exhibits (Museum, Gardens, ...))
The Students of Candace Keller's Contemporary African Art Seminar Class along with the Kresge Art Museum present Africa Here & Now: Contemporary Art & Identity.
This exhibition presents a collection of African artworks from various commissions around the local area, as well as ones housed at the Kresge Art Museum.
The Contemporary Art period in Africa is somewhat complex. The issue of identity is present in many artworks created during this ongoing period. Identity is important in considering contemporary African Art because its definitions are ambiguous at best. For years, African artists have been trying to find an aesthetic that fits with their own cultural ideals without adhering to an "African" Stereotype. This show will attempt to uncover the motivations and complexities African identities and the works produced by them. Artists featured in this exhibit demonstrate the diversity and complexity that make up contemporary African art and identity.
