Dr. Gray will present her research in a lecture titled, Designers' Challenge: The Use of Shawl-patterned Fabrics in Tea Gowns of the 1870s-1880s. Helvenston Gray will discuss the unique discovery of a number of tea gowns and wrappers constructed of the same or similar shawl-patterned cachimere decousse fabrics dating to the late nineteenth century. The marriage of textile design with garment design is explored, along with the orgin and spread of this particular fashionable style.
