Maternal Autonomy and Infant Health in Rural India
(Academic) Childhood under-nutrition is a public health issue throughout the developing world. Poor nutritional status is evident in children even when parents meet their daily dietary requirements. Recently, investigators postulate a linkage between women's autonomy and child health, particularly in countries such as India whee mothers play a vital role in childcare. This talk presents results from a study embedded in a randomized educational intervention trial to improve infant feeding behaviors among a rural population in the state of Andthra Prades, India. We investigate teh influence of maternal autonomy on child feeding and child nutritional status through a mix-methodological approach. We also explore local perceptions and beliefs, regarding women's autonomy as well as the influence of environmental factors, such as income and family structure, on infant feeding practices.
