Runaway To Nowhere: A discussion with novelist Qasham Ali Balata
(Academic)
Run Away to Nowhere is the story of Nareen and Karwan, who have fallen in love with each other in a very strict society. As students at the local university, their story crosses the path of the first Gulf War. Events transpire and Nareen is separated from her family; she finds herself wandering the snowy mountains of Kurdistan, accompanied by her six-year-old brother.
When she finally arrives at the refugee camp, she meets and befriends a female American journalist who will do her best to get her information about her lover, also lost in the ordeal of the massive evacuation of Kurds from their towns in northern Iraq.
It is a love story in a land stripped of its very humanity. It is a story about a culture that is by and large unknown to the rest of the world. This is your gateway to the Muslim world, to Kurdistan, to Iraq, and to the heart of where civilization and humanity first met.
