20 Years of Mental Health Research in Colombia by Roberto Mejia  (Academic)

20 Years of Mental Health Research in Colombia: Lessons Learned and Opportunities for Translating Research into Practice
Roberto Mejia, PhD

Research on mental health in Colombia has evolved substantially during the past 20 years using epidemiological methods. In this talk, Dr. Mejia will share the chronology of national and local representative surveys in mental health and drug use. He will also share two secondary analyses of data from representative samples of Colombian adolescents and adults looking at the relationship of exposure to violence on individual externalizing and internalizing outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, violent behavior, and resilient outcomes.

Roberto Mejia Montoya is a behavioral scientist and associate professor at the Center for Excellence on Research in Mental Health (CESISM) at CES University, School of Medicine, located in Medellin, Colombia. Dr. Mejia served as a program analyst intern for the Division of Health Care Financing in the State of Wisconsin. He also worked as a public health analyst for the CDC's Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention before returning to his home country last December.

During the past 15 years, Dr. Mejia has conducted research on the prevalence of drug use and drug abuse among Colombian youth. He has also studied the effects of exposure to different types of violence on adjustment among Colombian and African American youth residing in Richmond, Virginia
