Film Screening and Panel Discussion of "LAST TRAIN HOME"

EAST LANSING SHOWING OF CHINESE FILM "LAST TRAIN HOME" AND SPECIAL PANEL DISCUSSION ON TUESDAY, APRIL 26
MSU Asian Studies Center, Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives and the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations are excited and pleased to co-sponsor the East Lansing Film Festival's upcoming showing of the award-winning film, "Last Train Home." The film will be shown seven times in the period from Tuesday, April 26 to Saturday, April 30,with a special panel discussion following the first night's screening on April 26. Tickets will be available at the door for $7, $5 for seniors (65+), $3 for students.
A description of the film: "Every spring, China's cities are plunged into chaos, as all at once, a tidal wave of humanity attempts to return home by train. It is the Chinese New Year. The wave is made up of millions of migrant factory workers. The homes they seek are the rural villages and families they left behind to seek work in the booming coastal cities. It is an epic spectacle that tells us much about China, a country discarding traditional ways as it hurtles towards modernity and global economic dominance.
On Tuesday, April 26, we will have a special audience discussion following the film. A panel of faculty from MSU and UM familiar with Chinese workplace issues and culture will explore questions and issues raised by the film.
The panel will include Peter Berg of MSU's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations; Hu Li of Nanjing University's School of Business and visiting professor in MSU's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations; and Zhang Yanjun, Professor of English, Southeast University, China/Visiting Scholar, MSU Global Studies in the Arts & Humanities. The panel will be moderated by MSU Professor, John Beck, director of Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives.
