The Verdehr Trio includes longtime faculty members of the MSU College of Music Walter Verdehr, violin, and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, clarinet, and Silvia Roederer, piano.
2012-2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the Verdehr Trio. Beginning with this concert and throughout the year, the trio will be performing specially designed anniversary concerts showcasing the repertoire the group has created over the last 40 years, featuring favorite movements of favorite works on each concert thus illustrating the variety and diversity of styles in the group's repertoire.
The June 13 concert will open with "Dash" by Jennifer Higdon, an energetic five-minute work depicting the mad dash of modern day life to which audiences always respond enthusiastically. In the middle, the group will feature movements from works by three MSU composers who have written for the trio in the past: Jere Hutcheson, James Niblock, and Ricardo Lorenz. Closing the program will be "Slang" by Libby Larsen, another perennial audience favorite illustrating the various jazz idioms in American music, including boogie-woogie.
An acknowledged leader in the field of new music, the Verdehr Trio has concentrated on molding and defining the personality of the violin-clarinet-piano trio for nearly 40 years. Founded in 1972 by Walter and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, the Verdehr Trio - with the support of MSU - has commissioned more than 200 new chamber music works from some of the world's most prominent composers. To round out its repertoire with Classical and Romantic works, the members of the trio have rediscovered and transcribed 18th and 19th century pieces for inclusion in the group's concert programs.
The Verdehr Trio has performed throughout the world - in 19 European countries, the former Soviet Union, in South and Central America, as well as in Asia, Australia, and all 50 of the United States. Major concert halls where the ensemble has appeared, include Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Library of Congress, Vienna's Brahmssaal, Sydney Opera House, London's Wigmore Hall, Auditorio de Madrid, Dvorak Hall in Prague, IRCAM Centre in Paris and Leningrad's Philharmonic Chamber Hall.
The group has also commissioned trio concertos from Buhr, David, Ott, Skrowaczewski, and Wallace, and has performed these pieces with Vienna Tonkunstler Orchestra, Honolulu Symphony, Prague Chamber Soloists, Vancouver CBC Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, and Flint Symphony, as well as with the National Orchestra of Spain and the Grand Teton Festival Orchestra. Recently the Verdehr Trio released a CD of Double Concertos for violin and clarinet by James Niblock, William Wallace and Dinos Constantinides.
