Professor Ellen McCallum presents a film in the continuing MSU Film Collective Fall Series, "Time and Memory."
A modern take on the melodrama, Ann Hui's adaptation of an Eileen Chang novel casts Leon Lai and Wu Chien-lien as young professionals in 1930s Shanghai who fall in love and hope to marry. Through image and voiceover, the film contrasts the memories and perspectives that each member of the central pair has on their courtship. A beautiful, languidly paced film whose sense of time passing, vigilance about the seductions of nostalgia and memory, and evocation of a key historical period brings the themes of time and memory to the screen in an exquisitely poignant way.
