Social Media Seminar Series: Privacy on Social Network Sites  (Academic)

A talk by Heather Richter Lipford, Associate Professor, University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
ABSTRACT: The proliferation of personal information being posted online has led to well publicized privacy issues. Users are sharing enormous amounts of personal information and updates with many people and applications on social network sites. Yet they are still struggling to cope with maintaining appropriate privacy in this new medium. In this talk, I will present the results of several projects aimed at understanding and addressing the privacy needs of users on social network sites. Our research demonstrates that users do have privacy concerns and problems, and could benefit from greater awareness and control over the sharing of their information. We have designed several new mechanisms and interfaces to address these problems, aimed at maintaining the social benefits of information sharing while reducing the risks of participating on social network sites.
