Wage-Slaves and Radicals: Writing a People's History of the 1913 - 14 Michigan Copper Strike
(Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)
Aaron Goings, St. Martins University, and Gary Kaunonen, Michigan Technological University
The 1913-1914 Michigan Copper Strike in one of the most important events in the history of working people and their unions in Michigan, and arguably misunderstood in its national importance more generally. In this talk based on their forthcoming book, Aaron Goings and Gary Kaunonen will paint a working-class history of the strike, presenting valuable new information and perspectives which enrich our understanding of the conflict from the bottom up. Their work is especially rich in placing Italian Hall, before and after the Christmas Eve tragedy where over 70 people -- mostly children -- perished after a false cry of "fire," into its broader significance to workers, managers and the wider Copper Country region.
