"Between the Private and the Collective: Writing Fiction about Social and Political Issues in Israel"
Presenter: Savyon Liebrecht, Israeli writer and playwright.
Born in Munich in 1948 to Polish Jewish Holocaust survivor parents, Savyon Liebrecht grew up in Israel and studied philosophy and literature at Tel Aviv University. Her writing focuses on the milieu of survivors, on women and gender in patriarchal Israeli society, on relations between generations, and on the tragic complexities of Jewish-Arab individual relations in Israel. Liebrecht is the author of "Apples from the Desert: Selected Stories" (2000), "A Man and a Woman and a Man" (2003), "A Good Place for the Night: Stories" (2006), and "The Women My Father Knew: A Novel" (2010). Her intense, lyrical, and emotionally complex stories have made her a best-selling writer in Israel.
