"The EU and its Working Definition of Anti-Semitism"  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Presenter: R. Amy Elman, Department of Political Science, Kalamazoo College

In 2005, the European Union appeared to have adopted a definition of anti-Semitism because, two years prior, the EU claimed that it had trouble monitoring the prejudice without one. This lecture examines the EU and its politics surrounding anti-Semitism and the definition it never formally adopted.

R. Amy Elman is Professor of Political Science and the William Weber Chair of Social Science at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. Her book, "The European Union, Antisemitism and the Politics of Denial" (University of Nebraska Press, 2015), explores the conditions that precipitated the EU's efforts to stem anti-Semitism and the consequences. Copies of her book will be available for sale at the lecture. Professor Elman has additionally been published on issues such as the response of states and the European Union to citizenship, migration, sex discrimination, and anti-Semitism. Co-sponsored with James Madison College, Peace and Justice Studies, and the Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.
