"Freedom and Death: The Holocaust and Greek Jewry"  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Presenter: Steven B. Bowman, Department of History, University of Cincinnati

While the Shoah destroyed 90% of Greek Jewry, including Salonika, the metropolis of Balkan Jewry, the Sephardim of Northern Greece and the Romaniots of Southern and Western Greece nonetheless contributed their part in the war against the Axis. Jews fought in the mountains and served in numerous facets of the Greek Resistance. In the summer of 1944 they were a central factor in the Birkenau uprising of the Sonderkommando and also participated in the Warsaw uprising that lasted through the autumn. Bowman will also discuss the origin of the phrase "[Not] as sheep to slaughter" and its WWII ramifications.
