Latin American Jewish Immigrants in the US
(Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)
Presenter: Steven Gold, Department of Sociology, MSU
Following on the heels of the settlement of Cuban Jews in Miami, in recent decades several thousand Latin American Jews have entered the US, seeking security and economic opportunity. Many of their religious, cultural, and social patterns as well as their notions of national identity and communal membership contrast with those of English-speaking American Jews. This presentation will describe their pre-migration lives, their reasons for coming, experiences of adaptation to the new setting, and ways in which their presence is transforming the rhythms of American Jewish life. Co-sponsored with the Department of Sociology.
