Doomed to Succeed: The US-Israeli Relationship from Truman to Obama  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Presenter: Dennis Ross, William Davidson Distinguished Fellow and counselor, Washington Institute for Near East Policy

Ambassador Ross served two years as special assistant to President Obama and National Security Council senior director for the Central Region, and a year as special advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. For more than twelve years, Ambassador Ross played a leading role in shaping US involvement in the Middle East peace process and dealing directly with the parties in negotiations. Ambassador Dennis Ross will discuss what the US should be doing today in the Middle East given the lessons he draws from the past. He wrote about these lessons in his recent book titled "Doomed to Succeed: The US-Israeli Relationship from Truman to Obama" (2015). Ambassador Ross explores the attitudes and approach of every president toward Israel and the Middle East, outlining the key assumptions, the unity or division of the president's advisors, the key events in each administration, and how the overall relationship has evolved. Ross highlights the lessons that should have been learned and were not, and what the implications are for US policy toward Israel and the region today. Co-sponsored by MSU Hillel Jewish Student Center, Asian Studies Center, James Madison College, Department of History, and the College of Arts and Letters.
