Radical Orthodoxy and the Controversy over Women's Education
(Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)
Presenter: Ilan Fuchs, visiting scholar, University of Michigan
Ilan Fuchs examines how Satmar rabbinic authorities interpret halachic texts about women's education in a non-traditional way that limits the educational advancement of women. In contrast to the Orthodox rabbinate, which did allow some study of Mishnah and Tanach for women, Fuchs' findings indicate that Satmar rabbinic authorities grossly minimize Jewish women's accessibility to Torah study, thereby losing the most important tool in their fight against assimilation and secularization: education. Co-sponsored by James Madison College, Department of Religious Studies, and the Center for Gender in Global Context.
