Panelists: Brad Rothschild (filmmaker, director of "African Exodus"), Barry Stein (Professor Emeritus, Political Science, MSU), Solomon Addis Getahun (History, Central Michigan University), Yore Kedem (Hebrew professor, Linguistics and Language, MSU), and Yael Aronoff (Director of Jewish Studies, Serling Chair in Israel Studies, MSU)

The panel will continue the conversation about the challenges that African migrants and refugees face in Israel that was highlighted in the film "African Exodus" screened the previous evening (10/18). Brad Rothschild will elaborate on the dilemmas he focuses on in his film, and fellow panelists will provide more insights into these challenges within Israel as well as provide a comparative context for the challenges that refugees face around the world. Barry Stein, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at MSU and affiliate with the African Studies Center, will discuss historical trends affecting migration, refugees, and asylum. Solomon Addis Getahun, Professor of African History at Central Michigan University, will discuss the varied experiences of Jewish Ethiopians in Israel who are granted citizenship and non-Jewish African asylum seekers and migrants. Yore Kedem, Assistant Professor at MSU of Hebrew, who also teaches a class on immigration, will discuss his guidance of student research papers focused on African asylum seekers and migrants in Israel during study abroad programs that he has led. Yael Aronoff, Director of Jewish Studies and Michael and Elaine Serling Chair in Israel Studies, will moderate and discuss Israel's refugee policies in comparative context. Brief presentations by the panelists will be followed by questions from the audience and discussion. Co-sponsored by James Madison College.
