History of Art and Visual Culture Symposium  (Special Events)

Teaching with Tech: Practical Uses of Digital Technology in the Arts and Culture Classroom showcases the recent work of both faculty and students who are exploring innovative uses of digital tools to rethink teaching and learning both in and out of the higher education classroom.

With the lowering of financial and technological barriers to entry, instructors are finding it easier than ever to experiment with the use of electronic tools to provide educational content in new and exciting ways. From wiki pages to 360° visual presentations to three dimensional scanning and printing, technological advances are enabling embodied and interactive experiences that encourage new approaches to instructional pedagogy.

As a reflection of this potential pedagogical shift, the 2015 Symposium will include the presentations by both faculty and students. For the student, this presentation is the culmination of the capstone experience course, HA 499 Senior Research and Professional Development, which focuses on the development of skills related to career planning and supplemented by a faculty-mentored research project. For members of the faculty, this event offers an opportunity to showcase the types of student / faculty collaborations that are a frequent aspect of scholarly work in the digital humanities.

In order to raise awareness concerning the many people and places helping to enable such innovations, afternoon activities will involve introductory tours at the facilities that provided the resources presented in the morning sessions.
