Folk Music of the Industrial Workers of the World  (Performing Arts (Dance, Music, Theatre, ...))

This program will feature folks songs created by the songwriters and activists of the Industrial Workers of the World in the first few decades of the 20th century. The IWW was an extremely colorful union which used music extensively in their organizing and strike actions. These songs by Ralph Chaplin and the most famous US labor martyr, Joe Hill, are still popular today. Charlie King, George Mann, and the folk duo Magpie (Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino) have used the recent 100th anniversary of the Utah execution of Joe Hill to tour the US presenting his music and the songs of the other IWW songwriters.
