SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OPEN HOUSE AFROFUTURISM: ORIGINS AND INFLUENCE OF THE BLACK PANTHER

Wednesday, March 21 • 2 to 5 p.m. Special Collections Seminar Room, Main Library

The film "Black Panther" has been received with much enjoyment and acclaim. However, the Black Panther's appearance in comics in the 1960s inspired much more.

In this pop-up open house, we explore the origins of the Black Panther, in #52 of Marvel's Fantastic Four and later in Jungle Action. We also explore how the Black Panther has influenced Afrofuturism in comic art and other genres through items in our Special Collections.

From sci-fi fiction to art, Afrofuturism is at one time a creative, a theoretical, and an inspirational force that is actively shaping and rewriting the Black experience.

Come discover the material behind the movie and see why Afrofuturism matters.
