National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory Seminar  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

Sait Umar from Vanderbilt University will be speaking.

The presentation is titled "Dynamics of quantum equilibration in low-energy collisions."

The presentation description is as follows:

A complete description of the interplay between equilibration, dissipation, and fluctuation mechanisms in interacting quantum many-body systems is an open problem in physics at every scale [1]. In nuclear physics, equilibration of mass and neutron-to-proton asymmetries is studied in collisions of atomic nuclei in which nucleons can be transferred between initially isolated nuclei [2]. Nucleon transfer is also expected to be a source of dissipation by transforming kinetic energy into internal excitation [3]. However, since we are dealing with quantum systems there are quantal effects that influence the equilibration process. Among these are the shell effects and deformations. For low-energy collisions time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) [4] theory and its extensions provide a microscopic approach to study these effects and processes.
