We are kicking off our series of lectures with Prof. Dan Hayden from MSU who will tell all we need to know about the physics being researched at the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest science experiment.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the most powerful particle accelerator in the World, based at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. This machine collides protons at close to the speed of light, creating energy densities similar to that from a few milliseconds after the Big Bang. At these unprecedented energy scales scientists are able to study the physical laws of nature in new ways, and try to answer some of the biggest remaining questions in physics. This talk will explain some of those questions, the research being done with the LHC, and how close we are to answering these mysteries.

This presentation is part of the Great Lakes Lectures series, online lectures featuring academics from Michigan State University. This series is organized by Prof. Dan Hayden and Dr. Elias Aydi, and live streamed from the Digital Scholarship lab at MSU Libraries.
