Super Science: The Legacy of Science in Superhero Comics  (Special Events)

Superhero comics (and movies) reflect a complex fascination with science and its places in U.S. culture. In this talk, we explore science's legacy in comics from its pulp roots to contemporary superhero film.

Superheroes have been linked to science from the earliest days of the comics to new cinematic adventures. What can comics tell us about the place of science in modern culture? How has the centrality of science mirrored broader sociocultural concerns? In this lecture, we explore the ways comic books and related media capture both the anxiety and aspirations linked to scientific innovation. Whether in the hands of heroes or villains, comics teach us to consider the power offered by science and caution us not to forget our responsibilities.

This presentation is part of the Great Lakes Lectures series, online lectures featuring academics from Michigan State University. This series is organized by Prof. Dan Hayden and Dr. Elias Aydi, and live streamed from the Digital Scholarship lab at MSU Libraries.
