Contextualizing the Practice of Land Acknowledgment at Michigan State University

Christie Poitra, interim director, MSU Native American Institute

Kristen Renn, Mildred B. Erickson Distinguished Chair in Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education, Department of Educational Administration and associate dean, undergraduate studies for student success research

There is a movement at land grant and other universities to offer land acknowledgements. Land acknowledgements are statements intended to affirm and honor Indigenous histories and relational connections to land and sovereignty. As these statements grow in popularity, it becomes important to consider what these statements mean within the context of the contemporary land grant system. This presentation will use the context of MSU's land grant identity to delve into the policy, history and meaning behind land acknowledgements and tangible ways to put these statements into action.
